What is Vaastu? |
Vaastu is a traditional Indian theory of
architecture that guides the design and construction of buildings and harmony with
the natural laws of the universe. Vaastu science has its roots in the Vedas dating
back 7000 years and is very mathematical. It provides detailed information about
how to select land, as well as how to design and construct buildings. |
|
How does Vaastu
help us? |
Vaastu harmonizes ones life with nature,
allowing one to unfold to their optimum potential. |
|
What is the significance
of the Vaastupurusha? |
Vaastupurusha is the symbolic representation
of all the physiological and psychological changes that take place within us as
well as within a house. |
|
Why are the directions
important in Vaastu? |
Different planets govern different directions
and have specific influences on the inhabitants. By understanding the directions,
one is able to balance the different forces harmoniously. |
|
According to Vaastu,
what do the various directions represent? |
Vaastu harmonizes ones life with nature,
allowing one to unfold to their optimum potential. |
|
What is the best
direction for a house to face? |
Each direction has an exalted position where
the front entrance can be placed and thus the house can face any direction. |
|
What are the things
that are to be kept in mind while selecting a plot? |
The major factors that should be kept in
mind while selecting a plot are geographical surroundings, level of the land, and
roads around the plot. |
|
Do colours play
a role in Vaastu? |
Yes, the colours in ones home or landscape
should be coordinated with the colours of the respective planets and elements associated
with different directions. Doing this will enhance the energy flow around you. |
|
How does Vaastu
affect me if I am living in a rental accommodation? |
Vaastu principles affect you wherever you
are living. |
|
How can Vaastu
be applied to commercial and industrial premises? |
The science of Vaastu is universal, and
the basic principles are applicable to all types of buildings. Some specific points
to keep in mind for commercial and industrial buildings are: inventory should ideally
be placed in the Northwest sector to facilitate faster movement; equipment should
be placed more to the Southwest and Southeast sides; chemicals should be stored
underground in the Northeast. |
|
Are Vaastu principles
uniform throughout the world? |
The principles of Vaastu are based on energy
flow and the distribution of elements. These factors are uniform throughout the
world. However, in different geographical locations the building could be designed
t accommodate various climatic conditions while preserving good Vaastu. For example,
if you are living in the Northern hemisphere, far away from the equator, a northeast
front entrance door can be exchanged for a wide glass window to avoid the cold North-easterly
winds.
|
|
As you go closer
to the North or South Pole, the East and West directions merge. How does one identify
the Vaastu directions from there? |
As per ancient Vaastu methodology one must
establish the direction of the East by using the help of a gnomon. A detailed explanation
of how to use the gnomon is given in the chapter, "Understanding Extension." |
|
What is the earth’s
polarity and how does it affect Vaastu? |
There is no reference in any Vaastu text
linking its principles to the earth’s magnetism. Vaastu is purely based on
the interrelationship of planetary forces and their elemental principles. Hence
Vaastu principles do not change with the change in earth’s polarity. |
|
What are the differences/similarities
between Vaastu and feng shui? |
Both have their roots in the knowledge of
planetary energies and the basic elements governed by the forces of nature. Feng
shui takes into consideration wind, water, fire, and air as the basic elements,
while Vaastu takes into consideration space, air, fire, water, and earth. Vaastu
is more mathematical. |
|
What is the main
object of Vaastushastra? |
The object of Vaastushastra is to provide
guidelines for proper construction of houses, shops, commercial buildings etc. Vaastu
determines the position of the house with regard to points of a compass and dictates
the proportions of every detail in building, lines, directions, skylines, elongations,
levels, slopes, water (underground and overhead), kitchen, bedrooms, toilets, staircase,
heights of ceilings and roofs, entrances, location of doors and windows, compound
walls and so on. |
|
Why one should
apply Vaastushastra? |
Vaastushastra is a result-oriented science
and gives definite and immediate results if applied properly. It defines the proportions
and details of building elongation, slopes, water tanks, kitchen, bedrooms, stairs,
heights of roofs, entrances, doors, windows, walls etc. Living in harmony with the
nature is theme of Vaastushastra. Vaastushastra is important for construction of
houses, villages, towns, and cities. |
|
How one can determine
direction of his plot? |
Direction of a plot can be determined by
any of the two modern simple methods by using a compass, the device for finding
direction which has a freely moving needle which always points to the magnetic North.
Make two lines crossing each other dividing a paper in four equal parts at 90-degree
angle. Place a compass on paper in the middle of your plot and align it with two
lines in the North and the South of the needle of the compass. Extend these lines
on the plot and mark it to have exact direction. |
|
Does Vaastushastra
bring prosperity? |
Yes, Vaastushastra suggests ways in which
we can live in tune with the laws of nature, so that we can be healthy, peaceful
and work efficiently that results in prosperity. |
|
Which is the ideal
plot? |
A plot is square if all four sides are straight
and equal in length and it has equal angle of 90 degree at all four corners. Square
is the best shape of a plot. A plot is rectangular if it has four straight sides
and equal angles of 90 degree at all corners with opposite sides of equal length.
A rectangular plot having its length not more than double the breadth (length and
breadth not more that 1:2) is a very good plot. |
